the problem

Litigants don't have access to the tools necessary to effectively represent themselves.

U Do It Legal (UDIL) is a legal firm that empowers self-representing litigants (SRLs) in California family law cases by providing accessible, attorney-vetted digital tools and legal information resources. Much of this is accomplished through their web application, where guided interviews and various resources take users through their cases and populate their court forms.

In this project, my team and I identified key usability and search engine optimization (SEO) problems within UDIL's free resources and eligibility quiz. We reviewed the layout, design, and content of the resource pages to assess both usability and effectiveness, while also noting potential gaps in coverage. Drawing on these findings, our team collaborated to redesign specific pages in Squarespace to improve clarity and accessibility for SRLs.

the solution

A website redesign focused on intuitive navigation for users who don't know where to start.

Resource Homepage

The Challenge: High navigation friction and low content discoverability prevented users from finding essential legal assistance resources.

The Solution: Designed an intuitive resource hub around primary user needs, surfacing the most commonly accessed tools front-and-center to streamline task completion and reduce search time.

Resource Page

The Challenge: Users arriving with specific legal questions faced unnecessary cognitive overload, scrolling past unrelated content to find actionable guidance.

The Solution: Architected a user-centered resource hub that categorizes tools by specific legal case types, streamlining the path to relevant support.

the process

A solution that addresses site-wide usability friction and low digital engagement.

To come to this conclusion, we conducted an end-to-end research initiative to understand member behavior, evaluate site performance against industry standards, and define high-impact design priorities for the ICCP web portal.

Usability & Heuristic Audit

Evaluated Nielsen's 10 heuristics and found problems with: visibility of system status, flexibility and efficiency of us, and aesthetic and minimalistic design.

Competitive Analysis

Benchmarked 6 companies, revealing that UDIL needed to limit animations, organize resources clearly with brief descriptions, and keep information concise.

search engine optimization

Optimized UDIL's SEO through SEMRush keyword validations to target high-volume, low-difficulty family law search terms.

Prototype Validation

Conducted A/B testing to validate designs, revealing that the 3-step process and resources by case type features could be redesigned to increase ease of readability.

Outcomes

Streamlined Typeform Eligibility Flow

Redesigned Typeform quizzes with contrasting status screens and simplified icons to improve clarity and remove insensitive elements.

Enhanced Portal Value & Engagement

Addressed self-representing litigant friction points by restructuring the free resource layout and establishing a dedicated FAQ section.

Immediate Access to High-Value Assets

Created a centralized Free Legal Resources hub with intuitive category icons, concise descriptions, and quick-access templates for family law case types.

Optimized Search & SEO Visibility

Established heading hierarchies and targeted low-difficulty legal terms to improve search engine discovery and crawler comprehension.

My Contributions

This project was completed in collaboration with my team of seven other Purdue students. Below, I go into depth about more of my specific contributions.

  • Project Mentor: As a mentor for this project, I supported new students through regular check-ins, and walking through tasks in-depth to ensure they understood what they were to do prior to completing the activity.

  • Project Planning Lead: I led our team as we decided on activities and scheduled out our project, ensuring that everything that we decided on was realistic and beneficial.

  • Heuristic Leads: I led our heuristic evaluation by deciding on our user personas to evaluate through and creating the protocol for the evaluation.

  • Resources Homepage & Resources-by-Case-Type Design lead: I went through the full design process, from wireframes to high-fidelity, for both the Resources Homepage & Resources-by-Case-Type pages, focusing specifically on designing for specific user groups.
